Daily Training Kickstart

When your dog doesn’t know what to do, she’s not happy, and neither are you. By spending just 5 minutes a day on training, you’ll help her use Brilliant Pad like a Pro.

After taking BrilliantPad out of the box, let your dog get comfortable around BrilliantPad (accept) and encourage your dog to explore the machine (explore). If your dog is calm and/or seems interested in BrilliantPad, you can move on to training (potty).

We make it easy to get started.

Start with our "Best Practices Training Video" followed by the training that describe your situation:

Best practices training video

All dogs require some training to adopt new behavior. Consider training 5 minutes a day to be a small investment with a big payoff: a cleaner home and a healthier dog.

  • Be patient, consistent and positive with your training. Punishment is counter productive. Instead, give you pup lots of praise, treats and affection. Focus on encouraging and rewarding good behavior.
  • To facilitate training, use confinement training and put your dog on BrilliantPad:
    • When your dog wakes up
    • 10-15 minutes after eating
    • After playing
    • Anytime you notice pacing, circling or sniffing
  • Practice "Sit!" and "Stay!" commands to distract your dog from any motion or sound coming from the machine. This technique will promote greater acceptance when you are not home.
  • Always praise your dog after using BrilliantPad. Consider keeping treats near your BrilliantPad and get ready to unleash your inner cheerleader: Go! Dog! Go!

Puppy New to Pads

Many veterinarians and animal behaviorists recommend putting your puppy in a small room or a gated area to keep your puppy safe and your floors accident free. Watch this video to learn how to use the confinement method to train puppy to use BrilliantPad.

Puppy Confinement Training Tips

  • Setup a confined training space with a bed, food, water and BrilliantPad as well as some room for play.
  • Put your puppy in the confinement area whenever you go out, cannot supervise directly or when it is time for bed.
  • Put your puppy on BrilliantPad 10 to 15 minutes after eating, playing, waking up or anytime you notice pacing, circling or sniffing.
  • If your puppy poops on BrilliantPad, advance the pad to minimize waste tracking through the training area.
  • If your puppy pees on BrilliantPad, don't advance the pad right away. Leaving a few pee spots can help"scent-identify" the potty area.
  • Give your dog a treat and lots of praise after going potty on BrilliantPad.
  • If your dog has an accident, clean up with up TIDY SHOT Enzymatic Cleaner so the accident spot doesn't become the potty spot.
  • Be consistent and positive. Shouting is counter-productive.
  • Sometimes house training is a dance, one step forward, one step back. Be patient and jitterbug your way to success.

Dog Currently Uses Pads

Transitioning from regular pads to BrilliantPad

  • Setup BrilliantPad in your dog's current potty spot.
  • Place regular pads on top of the machine.
  • After your dog successfully goes potty, replace with another pad.
  • After several days of success, cut or fold the pad in half or replace with a clean half-pad.
  • Progressively make the pad smaller until your dog goes directly on BrilliantPad.

Helpful Tips

  • If your dog is scent-based, use a slightly soiled pad or spray GO HERE Attractant on a clean pad.
  • If your dog has an accident, promptly clean up with up TIDY SHOT Enzymatic Cleaner so the accident spot doesn't become the potty spot. Then return to the last successful step for a few days and resume the process.
  • If mistakes are frequent, put a pad where accidents are happening. Then move the pad closer to the machine and eventually onto BrilliantPad.
  • Dogs are unique and respond to training differently. Sometimes the progression is a dance, one step forward, one step back. Be patient and jitterbug your way to success.

Tips For Nervous Dogs

Transitioning from grass patches

If your dog goes potty on a fresh grass patch or piece of artificial turf, put some of the grass or turf on BrilliantPad. Gradually reduce the size until your dog goes potty directly on the machine. Continue reading to learn how to transition dogs from from grass patches to BrilliantPad.

  • Setup BrilliantPad in your dog’s current potty spot.
  • Place a portion of the grass patch or artificial turf on BrilliantPad. This signals your dog can go potty here.
  • After your dog has successfully gone potty on the grass or turf several times, remove some of the grass.
  • Progressively make the patch smaller until your dog goes directly on BrilliantPad.

HELPFUL TIPS

  • Give your dog a treat and lots of praise after going potty on BrilliantPad.
  • If your dog has an accident, clean up with TIDY SHOT Enzymatic Cleaner so the accident spot doesn't become the potty spot.
  • Be consistent and positive. Shouting is counter-productive.

  • Sometimes house training is a dance, one step forward, one step back. Be patient and jitterbug your way to success.

Adult dog not currently using pads

It is near impossible for most people to train an adult dog that is not currently using puppy pads to use BrilliantPad. After all, there is a reason people say, “It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks!”

If you are exceptionally determined and remarkably patient, however, it may be possible to train your adult dog to use BrilliantPad.

Be mindful this is really hard and BrilliantPad does not provide training support for this use case. For best results, work with an Animal Behaviorist or Certified Dog Trainer and practice the training outlined below.

METHOD FOR TRAINING ADULT DOGS

  • Let your dog get comfortable on BrilliantPad. Encourage your dog to go on the BrilliantPad platform. Praise him whenever he gets on -- even if he doesn’t go potty.
  • Lead your dog to BrilliantPad by his leash at potty time. If your dog goes potty on BrilliantPad, shower him with praise and give him a treat.
  • Take along a portion of a BrilliantPad roll when you walk your dog outside. Put the pad on the ground and lead your dog onto the pad. Repeat until your dog learns to go potty on the pad outside.
  • Bring the pad indoors and put it on BrilliantPad. Lead your dog by the leash to the machine with a slightly soiled pad on the platform. Once your dog starts going potty on the pad, watch the Transition From Regular Pads video for guidance on how to help your dog transition to going directly on BrilliantPad.
  • If there is ever a challenge, return to the last successful step. Remember, you are teaching the dog new habits, and follow Training Best Practices.
